Axel - Clellan Card
Clellan Card's "Axel and his Dog" gets considerably more coverage up there (a SEGMENT  in LOST TWIN CITIES a KTCA series based on the book) than Casey, even though Casey was around a lot longer. I guess the attraction with Axel is that he was a bit more unusual--more of a character--and that he died  early on.

Axel had a little toothbrush mustache. He also talked in an exaggerated Swedish  accent, which was a hoot! When he passed away, "Carmen the nurse" (Mary Davies),  who was his sidekick, inherited the show. For a little more on Axel, visit Julian West's website, Axel's Treehouse or  check out this page on the KTCA website

Clancy the Cop, Carmen the Nurse, and Willie Ketchem
John Gallos, Mary Davies, and Allen Lottsberg

Clancy and Willie, and Carman the Nurse, ran weekday mornings on WCCO all the way to 1978. One of the highlights of both shows were Little Rascals/Our Gang comedies.  Carman actually started as a charactor on Axel's Treehouse, and took over when Axel passed away.  Check out this page of Clancy photos.

Dave Lee -- The Popeye and Pete Show
W
TCN had another show featuring a puppet named Pete the Penguin. That was Dave Lee (NOT the one who's on WCCO radio these days). At one time the show was called "Popeye and Pete," and they featured Popeye cartoons. Later it was "Dave Lee and Pete" when the Popeye cartoons went elsewhere.  Dave Lee's puppets included - Pete the Penquin, Omar the Allegator, and Frangrent the Skunk.   At one time, Omar was "stolen" and he had to create a new puppet.

There was always a studio audience that got grab-bags full of various kid-related products that got a daily plug on the show when a lucky audience member got to tell  what was in the bag for that day. Pete would accompany the kids through the audience and would pull the pony-tails or pigtails that the little girls wore. As a result, it was rare when a girl appeared on the show WITHOUT a pony-tail or pigtails. He did this to girls only, when he would pull the pony tail there would be a funny sound. Then some scout started doing this and Pete went along with it.

Dave Lee's show actually started on KMSP, Channel 9.  Check out this
early advirtisement to see Dave and some of his puppets and this trading card of Dave and Pete. Dave is retired and living in San Diego.

Captain Daryl

Captain Daryl was a local show on KSTP, channel 5.  Check out this page of Captain Darryl goodies.

Captain Ken
KMSP had "Captain Ken" played by Ken Wagner, whodid his show from a riverboat set before the character "retired" and became "Grandpa Ken."    Jack Kennelly shares a rare interview with Grandpa Ken and this photo of Grandpa Ken

The Happy Hour

The Happy Hour with Fred & Friends was WTCN's follow up to the Popeye and Pete show, featuring Phil Johnson and his puppets.
